How to make hemp paper?

Hemp paper is made from the bast fibers of the hemp stalk. The process of making hemp paper involves several steps:

  1. Harvesting: Hemp plants are typically grown specifically for fiber production. When the plants reach maturity, they are harvested, and the stalks are harvested.

  2. Retting: The stalks are then subjected to a process called retting, which helps separate the fibers from the woody core (known as hemp hurd fiber). Retting can be done in different ways, such as dew retting (exposing the stalks to moisture), water retting (submerging the stalks in water), or chemical retting (using chemicals to break down the fibers).

  3. Breaking and Scutching: Once the retting process is complete, the stalks are mechanically broken and scutched. Breaking is the process of chopping the stalks into smaller pieces while scutching involves removing the broken pieces and woody core (hurd) from the bast fibers.

  4. Pulp Preparation: The separated fibers are then cleaned and prepared for the pulp-making process. They are typically soaked in water to soften them and then mechanically beaten or pulped to create a fibrous pulp.

  5. Papermaking: The hemp pulp is mixed with water to create a slurry. This slurry is then poured onto a mesh screen called a deckle, which allows the water to drain away, leaving behind a mat of intertwined hemp fibers. The mat is then pressed and dried to remove any remaining water and bond the fibers together.

  6. Finishing: After the drying process, the resulting paper sheet is further processed to achieve the desired smoothness and texture. This may involve additional pressing, calendering (passing the paper through rollers), and cutting into desired sizes.

It’s important to note that the specific methods and equipment used in hemp paper production can vary depending on the manufacturer and the desired quality of the paper.

However, the general steps outlined above provide an overview of the typical process involved in making hemp paper.

The Most Common Questions About Hemp Paper

Hemp paper is possibly the worlds greatest solution to tree-free paper, that is an all-natural, biodegradable and sustainable plant fiber paper made from the bast fibers of the hemp stalk.

Many people over the years have claimed that the final draft of the Constitution was written on hemp paper, but that is not the case.

The Constitution was written on Parchment Paper, however, it’s been said that several of the original drafts were written on hemp paper.

It’s not surprising since Benjamin Franklin had a paper mill that incorporated hemp fibers. So it’s not surprising that some of the original drafts were inked on hemp paper.

The main reason why we (as in humanity) doesn’t use hemp paper, is due to the demonization of this plant over the last hundred years.

In fact, if you read The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Hack Heror you will learn about the conspiracy to outlaw hemp, due to it’s major threat on the lumbar industry for producing much of the US nation’s paper.

If you made it through all the content on this page, you can see that we are NOW offering several hemp paper products to help you achieve your goals and live in alignment with your values.

Many people don’t realize that hemp paper is even an option to promote their brand, use for packaging and so much more!

Making hemp paper is similar to making many other types of paper. Refer to this section of the page for the step by step process.

It is certainly possible, however, why isn’t hemp toilet paper being made yet? The main reason is that hemp fibers are much more coarse and fibrous than tree fibers. So a lot more processing would be required to get hemp fibers soft enough and small enough to turn into toilet paper.

Secondarily, toilet paper manufacturing is a process that requires a lot of input and continual production in order to make it profitable. And there just is not enough hemp being grown or a factory that is willing to put in the research and development due to the high costs.

However, don’t be discouraged, eventually this will be a thing.

Hemp paper is far more sustainable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable. Of course other tree-based papers will also biodegrade, but they are often processed with harsh chemicals, and not to mention trees are being cut down to produce it.

There are far too many benefits to using hemp paper to list here, but the top 10 benefits are:

  • It’s far more sustainable
  • It’s chemical and toxin-free
  • It does not contribute to deforestation.
  • It lasts longer than standard tree paper
  • It’s far more durable
  • It requires less water to produce
  • It can be recycled many more times than standard paper due to the strength of the fibers.
  • Can be used for many applications including heavy-duty construction applications

Paper made from hemp fibers is a premium product and requires more processing than standard tree paper. Not to mention, there is not nearly as much raw material to be processed compared to tree pulp. So with the scarcity of raw material and extra processing required, it makes it a more valuable product.

100% Yes. It’s a natural fiber processed without any harsh or toxic chemicals and will completely biodegrade.

They certainly can, but just like we explained in the question about hemp toilet paper, we are in the same sort of situation with hemp paper towels. However, if it’s a race between hemp paper towels and hemp toilet paper as far as which one would be produced first, it’s going ot be hemp paper towels. But to our knowledge, they are not commercially available on the market.
